This is a pretty interesting video and survey. I wonder if this survey is so drastically different because it is in Austin. From what I know of Austin (new to the city) people are a lot more free thinking, progressive, and socially liberated than other cities I’ve lived in. For example, I’m from St. Louis originally, and there, among the same age group, if you’re not wearing something with a logo, you’re generally laughed at or mocked (if you are part of the hip crowd.) Everyone that you showed in this video not only claimed to shy away from big brands, but they lived the talk (purple hair, piercings, no cliche hipster garb).

The viewpoint that stood out to me the most what the “fast food society” comment. I don’t know if it’s the advancement of media and technology or the evaporation of patience, but there is no focus on development or individuality when it comes to commercially viable businesses. Everything is “just add water” marketing and see what happens. The ironic thing about that is the companies that tend to do their own thing and be forward thinking, are the big companies that these same people dislike. A great example would be that Apple/iPod’s marketing and development campaign is always something that makes you say “wow” and the competition say why didn’t I think of that. However, people HATE Apple/iPod in the general arena.

I guess the best way to simplify that is just like you said, Small = Big. As long as you have a small town attitude, we don’t care about the lights in your big city, so to speak.

Anyway, interesting vid. Sorry for blabbing.
